I’m preparing a lesson on the Tokugawa dynasty (1600-1868) in Japan in my BIC class next week, and I like how the following haiku expresses a kind of sadness that accompanies new beginnings:

The first day of the year:

thoughts come–and there is loneliness;

the autumn dusk is here.
